33 Meru MCAs Back Impeachment Motion Against Governor Mwangaza

At least 33 Meru MCAs have sworn to back the impeachment motion brought against Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

The MCAs stated on Tuesday that Mwangaza’s impeachment was in the best interest for the county.

Twenty MCAs from the Devolution Empowerment Party, ten from the Jubilee Party, and three from the NOPEU Party are among those supporting the motion.

Evans Mawira, the majority leader of the Meru County Assembly, led the MCAs who announced last week that they were withdrawing their support.

“It is not our agenda to see chaos, to see drama in the county so we have decided to withdraw the support within and outside the assembly that we had given the governor,” Mawira said.

Oon Friday, Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi urged MCAs to oust Mwangaza.

The minister who unsuccessfully vied for the gubernatorial seat in 2022, said that the people no longer want Mwangaza to be governor.

The former area senator also asked Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua not to intervene.

“Meru is bigger than the Deputy President. I don’t think DP Rigathi Gachagua can fail to listen to what the Meru people are saying. Meru is simply saying Kawira must go,” he said.

Linturi was speaking after visiting Meru Deputy Governor Isaac Mutuma who was receiving treatment at the Karen Hospital.

Mutuma was admitted on Friday after being grilled by the DCI over chaos witnessed on Sunday during Mwangaza’s “Okolea Program” meeting.

“I urge all the Meru MCAs to go back and do the necessary. We’re entirely embarrassed! It’s a matter of when and not if,” the CS said.

Linturi said that the constitution allows the MCAs to carry out their mandate of impeaching the county boss.

“It has reached a point where people exchange words in front of the President. I cannot keep quiet when Meru is going in the wrong direction,” he said.

“Meru MCAs should dispense their constitutional mandate if the differences between Mwangaza, his deputy and other leaders are inconsolable.”
