Kiambu Governor Race Hots Up as Kabogo Throws Hat in Ring

Tujibebe Wakenya party leader William Kabogo is going to fight for the Kiambu governor seat, again.

Kabogo lost the seat in 2017 to Ferdinand Waititu aka Baba Yao who consequently lost it to his then deputy, James Nyoro after the Senate upheld his impeachment in January 2020.

Speculations were rife that the first Kiambu governor was going to vie for the presidency in 2022 but on Sunday, Kabogo told the people in Thika that he was officially going for the governor seat.

“I have been listening to the people of Kiambu who want me to contest the governor’s seat. I will obey your wishes despite the fact that I was interested in the presidency,” Kabogo said during a rally attended by One Kenya Alliance principals Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi, Gideon Moi and Moses Wetang’ula.

Also throwing their hats in the ring are the current governor Nyoro, Waititu, Senator Kimani Wamatangi, Assembly Speaker Stephen Ndicho and Thika Town MP Patrick Wainaina.

Waititu who is in the deputy president William Ruto United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is expected to fight for the party ticket with Wainaina.

Nyoro has since ditched the Jubilee party but is associated with Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja movement that was formally launched on December 10.

He (Nyoro) and three other Mt Kenya governors; Francis Kimemia (Nyandarua), Ndiritu Muriithi (Laikipia), and Lee Kinyanjui (Nakuru) are yet to announce their 2022 political vehicle.

Wamatangi, a close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta, and Ndicho have remained cagey about where their loyalties lie.
