Nyong’o Rivals Front Obura as Gubernatorial Candidate

Former East African Community Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Ken Obura will face off with Prof Anyang Nyong’o in the ODM primaries for the Kisumu governor ticket.

This follows a consensus between Kisumu Senator Fred Outa, former Governor Jack Ranguma, former Kisumu County Assembly Speaker Onyango Oloo and Obura after months of joint campaigns.

The quartet pledged to consolidate their support bases in a bid to oust the incumbent who they accused of failing the residents.

“We have decided to follow instructions from the party headquarters, that before we declare anyone we must sit and have a consensus. The five of us all agreed that the person who is going to be able to carry the flag is none other than Ken Obura,” said Outa on Friday.

Should Outa fail to clinch the party ticket, the four said they will field another candidate in the August polls.

The former Kisumu Central MP said he will in coming weeks popularize his candidature and manifesto.

“I want to assure you that we’re going to walk together. I will begin my campaigns officially next week, door-to-door, to make sure I speak to you,” he stated.

“As your next governor, I want to assure you that we will make sure you’re happy every time, and we will make sure that our people who were previously happy in this city before Nyong’o took over are taken back to their original happiness.”

Last week, the quartet received a rather hostile reception in Muhoroni and later at Awasi when they launched an attack against Nyong’o.

Things got uglier when Outa and Obura started making unsubstantiated accusations against the county boss.

Their insults were met with “Nyong’o tosha” chants.

“Tell us what you have done as a senator for Five years instead of telling us about Nyong’o. Also don’t cheat us you helped Nyong’o to win in 2017 because we know the story (sic),” a resident is quoted by a news outlet.

Announcing their alliance earlier on this month, the four said their goal was to restore the county’s lost glory.

“We have agreed that we will form a new County Government in Kisumu,” they said.
