Sonko Formally Resigns from Jubilee Party

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has formally resigned from the ruling party, Jubilee.

In a letter dated March 11, the embattled former county chief requested the party headquarters to accept his resignation for it was in line with his rights to belong to a political party of his choice.

“Please accept this letter as my formal notice of resignation as a member of the Jubilee Party effective 10th March 2022. This is in exercise of my rights to belong to a political party of my choice as enshrined under the Constitution of Kenya,” Sonko’s letter read in part.

The ex-Nairobi senator, however, thanked the party for its support during his short-lived tenure.

Sonko also stated that he was “illegally, unconstitutionally, unlawfully and maliciously” ousted from office in 2020.

He did, however, wish the remaining members well in their future endeavours.

The former Makadara MP who was on Wednesday banned from setting foot in the United States, had on Tuesday expressed interest in reclaiming his seat.

Sonko, though cagey on his new political outfit, said he would vie for the governorship in the August polls.

Sonko stated that he will be written off politically only if he is rejected by the people, not by a group of people who wish to write his political obituary.

The former senator stated that he will not give up his quest to have his impeachment overturned by the Supreme Court, and that he believes he will be vindicated.

“I will be moving to the Supreme Court by tomorrow (today) morning. My notice of appeal is even ready. The law is very clear – you have to exhaust all avenues of appeal. If I don’t proceed with the appeal, then it means I cannot vie,” he said.

“I was removed by the system, cartels and deep state and not rejected by the people. There are rumours all over but my resolve is to go back to the people and let them reject me or elect me back to my seat.”

Sonko was impeached in December 2020, with 88 MCAs voting in favor and only two voting against the censure motion.

He was charged with violations of the Constitution and other laws, as well as abuse of office, commission of crimes under national laws and lacking the mental capability to run the county government.
