I Don’t Remember What Happened – Elgeyo Marakwet MCA Hopeful After Skipping Engagement

An MCA hopeful failed to show up for his engagement party on Saturday in Kapkoi, Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet County, causing controversy.

In accordance with Keiyo tradition, Theophilus Kiprop Kosgei, better known as ‘Chamaabuch,’ an aspirant Kaptarakwa ward, was poised to marry the love of his life in a lavish engagement party.

Through a Keiyo tradition of dowry negotiation, the two families were ready to exchange gifts and bless the young couple, solidifying their bond.

The bride’s family, tasked with hosting hundreds of visitors at their home, followed custom and erected tents on Saturday morning as early as 6 a.m., after a series of meetings.

At 10 a.m., everything was in place at Kapkoi Village, Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The food was prepared, the decorations were in place, and the 400-seater tents, as well as the cake and the bridal tents, were tastefully decorated in yellow and green.

The bride’s family had already taken their seats in the house by noon, preparing to meet elders for dowry negotiations.

As the day progressed, it became evident that the groom was nowhere to be found, and his entourage began making anxious phone calls.

When the ceremony appeared to be failing, guests were directed to eat lunch while the groom’s family’s elders packed their luggage and returned to Kaptarakwa.

Members who generously donated Sh19,100 to sponsor the event demanded their money back on his WhatsApp group, which he started months ago to generate finances for the event.

Angered by what had occurred, members began to ask one another questions on WhatsApp.

“We need our money back,” the Standard quoted one of the group members.

Another member said: “You have disappointed me today, and it’s regrettable you had to sacrifice your dearest wife.”

“Why, brother, did you choose to run away from your important day from your in-laws?” another posed.

For the better part of Saturday evening, the messages and unanswered inquiries persisted until one of the family members apologized.

The family spokesperson, Solomon Kandie, expressed regret over their brother’s absence.

“Good evening all. On behalf of Theo’s family, we express our sincere apologies for the no-show from our brother. We regret the inconveniences caused,” Kandie wrote in one WhatsApp group.

“However, we are putting efforts to trace his whereabouts. We pray that he is safe and sound wherever he is. Thanks, God bless.”

Kosgei reappeared on Sunday afternoon, apologizing in one of the WhatsApp groups.

“I am alright fellow friends, thank you for your concern for sure I don’t know what happened,” he wrote.
