Mombasa Politician Ali Mwatsau Hospitalised After Surviving Assassination Attempt

Ali Mwatsau, a Mombasa politician, escaped an assassination attempt on Tuesday night after unknown attackers fired 22 bullets into his vehicle.

Mwatsau, a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), is running for the Mvita parliamentary seat in the August 9 elections.

Mwatsau was on his way home after a prayer session when he was accosted by gunmen in Tudor’s informal settlements, a police report shows.

The incident happened at around 10pm near JCC Buxton.

According to reports, the gunmen, who were in two vehicles, fled the scene shortly after the attack.

The politician’s limbs and legs were seriously injured.

A tuk-tuk driver drove him to a Mombasa hospital, where he was admitted right away.

Detectives assigned to the investigation have since been to the crime scene, processed it, and gathered evidence that might help them solve the case.

After processing the scene, officers towed the car to the nearest police station.

Before producing a final report, the police are expected to produce a preliminary report.

As the inquiry into the incident began, a manhunt for the suspected gunman has also begun.

Nonetheless, eyewitnesses claimed that the operation to assassinate the aspirant was well-organized and that the assassins were well-trained.

They also wondered how the incident happened only 1.7 kilometers from Makupa Police Station, a six-minute drive away from the crime scene.
