Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has finally chosen Rigathi Gachagua’s replacement in the Mathira parliamentary race.
On Saturday while campaigning in the area, the party settled for Eric Wamumbi, Konyu Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA), as its candidate.
The position fell vacant after Ruto picked Gachagua as his running mate in the August 9 elections.
Dr Ruto on Sunday told the nation that he chose the legislator because he is a prayerful man concerned about the common Kenyan’s plight.

The DP also stated that his nominee will play a key role in the transformation of the economy, should they clinch the presidency.
“I assure you that Rigathi has a strong personality and I was looking for a strong man. I am comfortable with him because Kenya needs such strong people who can tackle the challenges of our nation,” he said.
“I chose Gachagua because he cares about the common person. He is a hard-working man who has always faced challenges head on and I have confidence in him.”
Wamumbi was introduced during the party’s first political event in the constituency since Gachagua was appointed as Ruto’s deputy.

He will now face Wambura Wamaranga, a 76-year-old billionaire running on a Jubilee ticket.
Wambura will be seeking re-election after losing to Gachagua in 2017.
Wamumbi was introduced at a rally that doubled up as Gachagua’s homecoming.
The now Mathira MP contender shot to the limelight following the death of his wife Catherine Nyambura in 2020.

Wamumbi was summoned when his wife’s body was discovered at Hohwe Dam, Mathira, as detectives attempted to piece together the events that led to her demise.
Nyambura’s body had no physical injuries, an autopsy performed by Dr Nyabuto Brenda, a pathologist who represented the family, showed.
The pathologist’s report revealed that her head, lungs and stomach had a lot of fluid.
