Sakaja Blames President Uhuru For Degree Drama

Nairobi senator and aspiring governor Johnson Sakaja has dismissed a letter from the Commission for University Education canceling his Team University degree.

Sakaja stated in a statement on Wednesday that it was part of President Uhuru Kenyatta and the deep state’s frantic attempts to frustrate him.

He claimed that he possesses the necessary academic credentials and that he will be on the ballot come August 9.

“To President Kenyatta, I say: Let the people decide. Not even the threats to arrest me will dim our resolve to serve the people of Nairobi. The people of Nairobi have resoundingly rejected your project and are looking forward to electing their own,” Sakaja said.

“I remain committed and confident that a new dawn for our capital is beckoning, a city of order and dignity; hope and opportunity for all. We shall not be cowed. We will prevail.”

Sakaja, who had been cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission before petitions questioning his eligibility were filed, claimed that CUE’s revocation was politically motivated.

He went on to say that he presented his degree for verification on June 6, and that the commission worked with their Ugandan colleagues, the National Council for Higher Education, before being issued with a clearance certificate.

“The purported revocation of my credentials by the Commission for University Education (CUE) chairman is null and void, and politically instigated. The chairman, Prof Chacha Nyaigotti Chacha, has been coerced and intimidated by President Uhuru Kenyatta to illegally revoke recognition of accreditation that has been properly issued,” the senator said.

The legislator then went on to share the documents on his social media platforms.

“Following this, President Uhuru Kenyatta and the entire State machinery have gone on an intimidation spree against institutions locally and in Uganda to revoke the recognition of my qualifications in a bid to stop me from being the Governor of Nairobi,” said the senator.

A letter dated June 14, 2022, from CUE said it had received material information about the authenticity of the Bachelor of Science in Management degree.

The commission said the degree will further be investigated to ascertain its validity.

“Consequently, in accordance with the CUE recognition procedures, we hereby revoke the recognition of your degree from the aforementioned university,” CUE chairman Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha said.

The commission had written to the senator on June 6 to confirm the certificate’s recognition.

Four people have questioned the validity of Sakaja’s Team University diploma, claiming it was fabricated.

Sakaja was allowed by the electoral agency on June 7 to run for Nairobi governor on a UDA ticket.

Dennis Wahome, one of the complainants, asserted in an affidavit to the IEBC that Sakaja never attended or graduated from Team University.

He said that Sakaja’s Team University Bachelor of Science in Management degree was printed on May 29, 2022.

In fact, Wahome claimed, Team University scrapped the Bachelor of Science in Management degree course in 2015, a year before Sakaja’s alleged graduation.
