Westlands Parliamentary Candidate Nelson Havi Attacked by Goons Allegedly Hired by Tim Wanyonyi

Nelson Havi, the former president of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), and his security were attacked in Westlands on Friday.

Havi claimed that his bodyguard was assaulted by goons hired by his political rivals, and that he sustained injuries as a result.

According to the lawyer, trouble ensued when he arrived at Gichagi, an informal community in Westlands constituency, when he was confronted by goons wearing Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) overalls.

The goons attempted to block the road while he was interacting with locals.

Havi stated that the goons were hired by Timothy Wanyonyi, the sitting Member of Parliament who is seeking a third term.

“The goons call for reinforcement of about 10 more young men in Tim Wanyonyi’s t-shirts. They block the road with motorcycles and an ODM banner bearing the portraits and campaign messages of Raila Odinga and Tim Wanyonyi,” he said.

When the rogue group began harassing Havi, local traders and locals intervened, but they were unable to quiet the unruly youths.

“Tim Wanyonyi’s goons zero on me but my bodyguard on the right sustains the cover. It is after this point that they target him (bodyguard) with blows and kicks on the shoulder and the neck,” stated Havi.

The bodyguard suffered cuts on his neck and was bleeding profusely.

Havi called the cops, and his bodyguard was brought to a nearby hospital for treatment and first aid.

“At MP Shah Hospital for treatment of my bodyguard who was injured at about 4.30pm by goons hired by Tim Wanyonyi to disrupt our interaction with residents of Mountain View Ward, Westlands constituency. There is video evidence of the perpetrators, led by Edward Mahugi Ebura,” he stated.

Similar incidents have occurred in the past as the country approaches the general election.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has urged Kenyans to keep the peace and practice restraint while interacting with politicians with only 51 days until the August 9 elections.

Political leaders have also been warned against manipulating young people to incite violence.

Nairobi, in particular, was classified among the counties most prone to violence by NCIC, with the likelihood of experiencing election-related violence being quite high.
