UDA Mumias Central MCA Candidate Bilal Musa Arrested in Case of Mistaken Identity

Police in Kakamega County arrested a UDA candidate in a case of mistaken identity.

The cops were trailing a suspect in an unmarked vehicle on Thursday.

As Bilal Musa waited to board a matatu to Mumias town, the detectives bundled him into their car. Musa is running for the Mumias Central MCA seat.

Police who were searching for a suspect mistakenly identified the politician as the culprit, said Mumias Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Muoni.

Since then, the police have expressed regret to the lawmaker, his family, and his supporters.

“Police officers were on patrol looking for a suspected criminal whose identity resembles that of the politician. They mistook the politician for the suspect and arrested him. We analysed the situation, explained and apologised to him and he understood what happened,” said Mr Muoni.

“A number of senior people have been following up on the matter but we have explained to them what happened and the issue has been settled.”

Mr Musa claimed that the incident caused his family distress.

“I was coming from my house at the Mumias Sugar estate and was waiting for a vehicle at the bus stage, when a black car approached where I was at high speed and screeched to a halt,” he recalled.

“Two men came out with firearms and shouted ndiyo huyu (here he is). They grabbed and threw me in the boot of their vehicle and started driving off at a very high speed.”

As he was being shoved into the boot of the car, Mr Musa said he was able to raise an alarm.

He was able to kick the boot open when the car slowed down as it approached a hump in the road and leaped out, landing on the tarmac and sustaining injuries on his hands.

Boda boda riders who had witnessed the incident sought to stop the police vehicle.

The car accelerated toward Mumias town as the politician extricated himself and jumped out of the boot.
