MPs Theuri, Moses Kuria, Shaban Concede Defeat

Embakasi West MP George Theuri’s attempt to run for a third term after serving as leader for ten years was rejected.

After serving for two terms, the legislator thanked his supporters for the opportunity to serve.

“In every competition, there must be a winner and a loser, that’s why I George Theuri concede defeat and peaceful hand over the button to my brother so as for the next 5 years to serve Embakasi west. Congratulations Hon Mark Mureithi Mwenje,” Theuri said.

“I want to take this early opportunity to sincerely thank the entire Embakasi west Constituency for giving me an opportunity to serve you for the past 10yrs.”

The outgoing MP urged his supporters to treat his successor with the deference that the position demands.

In 2013, he become the first Embakasi West MP under The National Alliance party.

Theuri beat ODM’s Brian Weke after garnering 40,606 votes against his 35,333.

In 2017, he was re-elected under the Jubilee Party, beating Tom Agimba of ODM who garnered 30,983 votes.

Also conceding defeat was Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria who was seeking to unseat Governor James Nyoro of Kiambu county.

In a statement on Facebook Tuesday night, Kuria said he is heading back to the private sector after eight years of service as MP.

“I enjoyed every minute of my 8 years in elective politics. Back to the private sector. Happily,” Kuria said.

His announcement came before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) made the final announcement on who had clinched the gubernatorial seat.

Kuria was in the race against Senator Kimani Wamatangi of UDA, former Governor William Kabogo of Tujibebe Party and Independent candidate Patrick ‘WaJungle’ Wainaina.

Others were Independent candidate Juliet Kimemia, Mwende Gatabaki of Safina and incumbent governor Nyoro of Jubilee party.

Earlier reports indicated that the outgoing legislator had submitted his name for nomination as MP in the next August House.

He, however, dismissed the claims saying: “In the unlikely event I’m not elected, you will not see me in politics again let alone seeking to be nominated. There is life beyond politics.”

Also hanging up their boots after 20 years of service was Naomi Shaban who lost her Taveta MP seat.

Shaban who was seeking a fifth term in parliament, congratulated her competitor, Bwire Okano, of Wiper party.

“Good people, there is time for everything. Well done team Bwire,” the Jubilee Deputy Party Leader said.

“Thank you for giving me a chance to serve you for 20 years. My young brother Okano, I congratulate you.”
