Blow to Didmus Barasa As IEBC Officer Declines to Handover Election Certificate

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has suffered yet another setback as a result of the Independent and Boundaries Commission’s (IEBC) refusal to provide his representatives with the election certificate.

George Omondi, the returning officer for the Kimilili constituency, insisted that the MP, who has been in hiding for the past 24 hours, physically appear at the tallying center.

Barasa is accused of killing the assistant of his opponent Brian Khaemba of DAP-K on Tuesday.

The aide, Brian Olunga, is said to have sustained serious injuries to his head.

The police were on Wednesday instructed to take the incoming UDA MP into custody by Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji.

Haji said he wanted Barasa apprehended in order to record a statement, and have the relevant file availed to the DPP’s office for action.

“DPP, Noordin Haji, has given directions to have Hon. Didmus Barasa apprehended, record a statement and have the relevant file availed to his office for appropriate action,” said Haji.

“According to police in Bungoma, the MP is still at large and his phone is switched off.”

Earlier reports indicated that the lawmaker could have fled to the neighbouring Uganda.

A police incident report states that Brian Khaemba, Barasa’s arch-rival, arrived at the Chebukwabi polling station to observe the vote-counting with the assistance of his security guard. Here, he ran into Barasa.

But as he was walking away, the MP pursued him and yelled at him to turn around.

According to the police, Barasa pulled out a gun and pointed it at Khaemba’s assistant, who is now deceased.

Olunga died from his injuries while receiving treatment at the Kimilili sub-county hospital.
