Schools to Reopen on Thursday – CS Magoha

Education CS George Magoha has pushed school reopening day from Monday to Thursday.

“Following the conduct of our National Elections on Tuesday 9th August, 2022 the process of tallying of ballots is still ongoing. Therefore, following further consultations, I hereby convey the Government’s decision on the suspension of the re-opening of ALL Basic Education institutions with effect from Monday, 15th August, 2022 until Thursday 18th August, 2022,” said the CS.

“This communication supersedes any earlier communication on the re-opening of basic education institutions.”

He had earlier declared that learning would resume on Monday, August 15.

“I ordered the early closure of all Basic Education Institutions to allow for adequate preparation and conduct of the General Elections. We indicated that reopening would be on the 11th of August 2022,” he said.

According to information provided to the ministry, the process of tallying votes may still be taking place on the aforementioned day.

The CS expressed regret for any inconvenience and stated that any previous communications about basic education institutions are superseded by his communication.

Every election year, schools are typically used as locations for voting and tallying.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission published a gazette notice announcing that over 250 schools would serve as tallying centers.

17 higher education institutions will serve as county tallying centers, while 230 schools in a few constituencies will serve as third schedule constituency tallying centers.
