Kenya Kwanza Nominates Wetangula for National Assembly Speaker Position

The Kenya Kwanza Alliance has picked Bungoma senator-elect Moses Wetangula for Speaker of the National Assembly.

The announcement was made by ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi on Saturday during the post-election agreement signing ceremony between Kenya Kwanza Alliance and the United Democratic Movement (UDM) party.

The Ali Roba-led party decamped from Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance.

“We have unanimously agreed to nominate Ford Kenya Leader Moses Masika Wetangula for the position of the speaker in the national assembly,” said Mudavadi.

In order to make room for a by-election, Wetangula has already state that he is prepared to accept the position and step down as Bungoma Senator.

According to Wetangula, the accord was governed by their Kenya Kwanza power-sharing arrangement.

“I am going to be the third in command of the country. I pray to God that he gives me the wisdom to lead the National Assembly and coordinate well with the Senate,” said Wetangula.

“We will bring good laws to this country, advocate for pro-people budgets and ensure that Kenya will never be the same again.”

Outgoing Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua’s Chama Cha Maendeleo (MCC) and Amason Kingi’s Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) bolted out of Azimio months before the elections citing intimidation.

The two parties have a cumulative six MPs and with an additional 10 independent MPs-elect, Kenya Kwanza could control the House.

In contrast, the Raila Odinga-led Azimio party has 155 lawmakers from affiliated parties, with the exception of two independents who have not yet chosen a side.

Four parliamentary elections, in Rongai, Pokot South, Kitui Rural, and Kacheliba, are still to be held.

Wetangula (Kenya Kwanza) and Kalonzo Musyoka (Azimio), are likely to face off for the House Speakership.

In a pre-election agreement, Kalonzo was given the chief minister slot after Raila settled for Narc Kenya’s Martha Karua as his running mate.

The party or coalition with a majority of legislators will have its way in the election of the Speaker.
