Nyong’o Criticizes President Ruto’s Cabinet Pick For Lacking Regional Balance

Governor Anyang Nyong’o of Kisumu has criticized President William Ruto for his cabinet picks, claiming that there was not enough ethnic and regional balance.

The head of Kisumu County criticized the President for letting the Devolution ministry go, claiming that this action violated the division of powers.

“Having seen appointments to the Cabinet on Tuesday, equity and regional balance, two components of national unity are prominent by their absence,” said Governor Nyong’o.

Even more remarkable to him was the lack of attention paid to devolution as a state department.

“The Constitution is very clear on this. We have two major branches of government in our Republic: national and devolved governments. Separate but interdependent. The President should have respected this principle in structuring his government,” said Prof Nyong’o.

Also questioning President Ruto’s decision to drop the Devolution ministry was former Defense CS Eugene Wamalwa.

Taking to Twitter, the former Devolution CS wondered the lack of the docket was an oversight or not a priority in the current administration.

“But am at a loss as to what happens to Devolution, is it an oversight or it is not a priority to this Administration?” he posed.

The Devolution ministry has been vacant since February when CS Charles Keter quit to vie for Kericho Governor seat.

Wamalwa was the Devolution CS until September 2021, when he moved to the Defence which was held by Monica Juma who was moved to Energy.

The Ministry works with County Governments to formulate policies, intergovernmental relations and capacity support.
