Meru MCAs Claim Governor Mwangaza is Disrespectful Ahead of Address

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza might have gotten off on the wrong foot with members of the county assembly.

The Ward Representatives have threatened to boycott government business ahead of the official opening of the assembly on Wednesday afternoon.

The governor has been accused by MCAs of ignoring them and being disrespectful.

The MCAs decided to confront the county executive on Tuesday afternoon after suspending house business to review their relationship with the governor.

Before addressing the media, they sang and shouted “bado mapambano,” led by Speaker Ayub Bundi.

The dispute jeopardizes the assembly’s ongoing vetting of County Executive Committee (CEC) members.

The passage of a supplemental budget to match spending with Ms Mwangaza’s development objectives is also expected to encounter obstacles.

Speaker Bundi claimed that after failing to meet the governor on numerous occasions, MCAs had resorted to boycotting her.

“The MCAs have agreed that they are not ready to listen to the governor during the address set for this afternoon,” Mr Bundi said.

“The MCAs wanted to agree on the ward fund and how it will work. They also want to be respected during the public meetings.”

He claimed that unless she was willing to listen to them, all of the MCAs had decided to abstain from the governor’s speech.

Governor Mwangaza, however, denied the allegations, claiming that she had met with the MCAs on numerous occasions and had community meetings with more than 20 of them.

On her Facebook page, she posted multiple images showing her attending public events with other MCAs.

“As a governor, I will not be intimidated by anyone because I swore to work for the people. I will not sit in the office to listen to the MCAs because I have to be with the people who voted for me,” Ms Mwangaza told Muuga FM on Wednesday morning.

She revealed that some of the MCAs held a secret meeting at an MP’s home. They allegedly discussed how they would sabotage her administration.

“Instead of talking about how they will pass the budget and [vet] the CECs, they are discussing greeting the governor,” she said.

According to Majority Leader Evans Mawira said the legislators are yet to build a working relationship with the county boss.

“We have not established any working relationship with the governor because she has not been picking up my calls, and neither does she talk to the Speaker or minority leader,” he said.

Minority Leader and Njia MCA Ali Mwenda said the executive was not willing to work with the MCAs.

“As the House leadership, we are surprised that the governor is not ready to talk to us. When the deputy governor was asked, he said the governor’s diary is full and we won’t be able to see her any time soon. This is why we won’t deal with any business from the executive,” Mr Mwenda said.

He added: “We want to be treated with respect and decorum.”
