Kandara, Garissa, Elgeyo Marakwet By-elections To be Held in January 2023

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has set the date for Kandara, Garissa Township and Elgeyo Marakwet by-elections.

According to IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati said the by-elections will be held on January 5, 2023.

“Following declaration of vacancies that occurred in the office of Members of National Assembly for Kandara and Garissa Township constituencies, Member of Senate for Elgeyo Marakwet County and Member for Shella Ward, Lamu County Assembly as confirmed by the respective Speakers vide letters dated 27th October 2022 for Parliamentary elections and 24th October 2022 for the County Assembly election, there shall be by-elections for Members of National Assembly for Kandara and Garissa Township constituencies, Member of Senate for Elgeyo Marakwet County and Member for Shella Ward in Lamu County,” he said.

The polls were occasioned by the resignation of the legislators who have since been appointed as Cabinet Secretaries by President William Ruto.

Aden Duale resigned as the Garissa Township MP to take up his new role as Defense CS.

Alice Wahome, the new CS for Water and Irrigation, resigned as Kandara MP. At least 10 aspirants have lined up to succeed her.

Kipchumba Murkomen, now former Elgeyo Marakwet Senator, is the new Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary.

The CSs were sown in on Thursday following their approval by the National Assembly on Wednesday.

Chebukati asked political parties planning to participate in the by-elections to submit the names of the candidates and the party primary date by November 14, 2022, at the latest.

He added that public officials planning to run for office should resign from their positions within seven days of the Speaker declaring a vacancy.
