Cops Who Teargassed Ruto Have Apologized – DP Gachagua

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that police officers who teargassed a church in Murang’a in 2020, have apologized.

Speaking on Sunday, the second-in-command said the cops reached out to him on Saturday and apologized about the incident.

The attack happened on October 4, 2020 at the AIPCA Kenol Church.

“The police and the administrative officers who were instructed to throw teargas at you, at our Bishops, they reached out to me last night and asked for forgiveness because walitumika vibaya and it was not their wish to cause the disgrace,” he said.

The DP apologized to President William Ruto on behalf of the Mount Kenya politicians as well as the church leadership.

He said: Your Excellency, you were our visitor and because you were shamed on behalf of the leaders and residents of Mt Kenya region, we ask for forgiveness. Please find it in your heart to forgive us.”

He added: “Our churches and clergy will get the respect they deserve from the government.”

“To our church leaders, you know the tear gas would not have been thrown into a church if the President and we had not been here… We would like the church to forgive us for that disgrace of the altar in a holy place.”

The President on his part apologized to the church as he was part of the former administration that orchestrated the attack.

“To the church, I’m so sorry. I am apologizing,” said the head of state.

Gachagua also hit out at the leader of opposition Raila Odinga who on Friday said he would not be coerced into joining the government.

“Yesterday we heard Raila saying that he will not be coaxed or intimidated to joining our government. We have no business with you in our government, we are not interested and we are not looking for you we have no time,” he said.

“They should be in opposition to oversight the government by informing us where we are wrong and pushing us in parliament for us to move forward as a country,” he added.

On Saturday, Raila said that people were being forced to join the current regime so as to get development projects in their areas.

“We cannot be threatened to join the government, which government?” he posed.
