Karua Challenges President Ruto’s Win at the East African Court of Justice

Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua has filed a petition at the East African Court of Justice contesting the ruling of the Supreme Court of Kenya on this year’s presidential election.

“The Supreme Court of Kenya failed, neglected or refused to ensure that all parties to the Presidentiual election dispute were accorded a fair trial, with equity of arms,” Ms Karua and Muslim for Human Rights (Muhuri) submit.

In a 14-page petition filed at the court, Karua who was Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition party presidential flagbearer Raila Odinga’s running mate, said the Apex Court applied an inappropriate standard of proof.

In September, the former Justice Minister said she disagreed with the court ruling that upheld President William Ruto’s August win.

Speaking at her Kimunye home, Karua said she was considering bringing her complaints before the East African Court of Justice, if only to get a thorough explanation of the 7-judge bench’s decision.

She claimed that many of the events surrounding the 2022 presidential election were confusing to her and that she was yet come to terms with the fact that they were defeated.

Hiyo ndio rule of law na democracy,” she said.

She added: “Kwa vile korti ilisema tuko na hot air…hot air balloon inaweza nipeleka East Africa…I am actually considering whether to travel on a hot air balloon to the East African Court just to discuss that judgment. Hii si maono ya Azimio, now it’s me as a Kenyan because also I’m entitled, as an individual, so it’s something I’m considering.”

She added that she was going on a political sabbatical but that, for the time being, they—Azimio—would have to live with and deal with the Supreme Court ruling.

“For now, because I have time, I will take a break…and also because korti ilisema baada ya siku 21 wataleta sababu zao za ile maono walitoa…nangojea hizo sababu,” she said.
