Kericho MCAs To Receive Sh2 Million in Allowances For Five Day Training at Weston Hotel

Members of the Kericho County Assembly are set to spend more than Sh2.1 million for a five day training session at President William Ruto’s Weston Hotel.

The Ward Reps will be trained on how to vet Chief Officer nominees. The training was sanctioned by Speaker Dr Patrick Mutai.

The speaker on Tuesday approved a memo by majority leader Paul Chirchir seeking facilitation for 37 members of the county assembly.

“In reference to standing order No.177, I hereby request for facilitation of all members of the county assembly to Nairobi (Weston hotel) from 15th November 22 to 20th November 22. The purpose of the meeting is to conduct a pre-vetting of County Chief Officers nominees,” the memo reads in part.

According to the Nation, a Ward Rep get Sh14,000 per day when in Nairobi while the Speaker pockets at least Sh16,800.

The legislators draw the same allowance when in Mombasa, Kisumu and Naivasha.

For the five days, the 37 lawmakers would receive a total amount of Sh2.072 million while the Speaker alone would draw a Sh67,200 allowance. This amounts to Sh2,139,200.

This amount does not include monies paid to the hotel, drivers, committee clerks, trainers and county assembly employees.

This comes even as the president cut the budgets on foreign travel, training, purchases of furniture, and motor vehicles, domestic travel, advertising, printing, hospitality and motor vehicles rental.

The head of state also directed county governments to cut back on unnecessary spending as he looks to bring the economy back to “sanity”.

On Tuesday, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has reinstated Vincent Korir as the majority leader of the Kericho County Assembly and Haron Rotich as the majority whip.
