Section of UDA Members Accuse CS Wahome of Intimidating Kandara MP Aspirants

A section of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party members want Water, Sanitation and Irrigation CS Alice Wahome to quit interfering with Kandara MP elections.

Ms Wahome is the immediate former MP for Kandara. She resigned after the National Assembly approved her nomination to President William Ruto’s Cabinet.

Led by the youth spokesman Laban Thuo, the members claimed that the former lawmaker is looking to dictate to the people who to elect in the January 5, 2023 mini-polls.

According to Thuo, the CS has been intimidating some of the aspirants and their supporters.

The youth leader alleged that Ms Wahome who served as MP for two consecutive terms, has a preferred candidate. She apparently wants her successor handed a direct ticket.

“We have information that the staff of the former MP are also being coerced to campaign for this particular candidate which is unacceptable,” Thuo complained.

He added: “We are urging Wahome to desist from engaging in active politics now that she is serving in the Cabinet and she is a civil servant.”

He asserted that the former legislator’s actions are a clear indication that the UDA primaries slated for November 26 will not be free and fair.

Thuo called on the party leadership to dispatch a new team to oversee the primaries as the team already in place is compromised.

“We also want the party officials in Kandara to resign and we have new ones to take over,” he said.

Alex Nduati, another member, called on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and UDA Chairman Johnson Muthama to intervene and restore confidence in the nomination process.

“We are demanding for a verifiable and transparent exercise without any interference from outsiders,” Nduati said.

14 aspirants are set to battle for the UDA ticket on Saturday.

Last week, former Nairobi Woman Rep candidate Wangui Ng’ang’a ditched the President Ruto-led party citing a sinister plot to shortchange the aspirants.

“I have information that Wahome wants to control the race and determine who will take over from her and this is unacceptable,” Ng’ang’a lamented.

“We are all going to the people seeking their support and thus we should be given an equal platform.”
