No Squabble Exists Between DP Gachagua and I – Sakaja

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has said there is no animosity between him and deputy president Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking on Sunday after a church service at Pefa South B, the governor said there were no problems between them, contrary to what is being reported.

“People are trying to create a tiff between the DP and me. They are taking advantage, especially people from other political parties are trying to create something that is not there,” he said.

The county boss said that he has private conversations with both President William Ruto and his deputy.

Last year, Gachagua scolded Sakaja over plan to ban long-distance matatus from the central business district (CBD).

The former Mathira MP said the governor should have consulted him before taking action that could negatively impact businesses belonging to Mt Kenya people.

According to Gachagua, it was he who held talks with locals who in turn voted for Sakaja.

“We do not want his high speed (in making decisions) and I have summoned him for a sitting…It is a no for any of his decisions that might have negative effect on our people,” he said.

“We made you governor and we are vigilant on our interests” and “we must get involved in those decisions that have an effect on our people.”

The DP insisted that decisions that could negatively impact Mt Kenya businesspeople had to be brought to him first.

“I want Sakaja to note that all decisions that will negatively affect Mt Kenya people in Nairobi must be discussed. I have to be involved. We will not accept anything that troubles our businessmen,” said the DP.

The former Nairobi senator, however, insisted that he will not speak ill of any leader.

“I have respect for all leaders regardless of their political divide including the DP. You will never hear me speak ill of any leader,” said Sakaja.

He also maintained that plans to decongest the city are in top gear and there will be no turning back.

On Thursday, the county chief said that change was inevitable.

“I have heard talk that Nairobi was like this before I was born, but I want to tell them that that’s why I am the governor. We must change our city, and there is no shortcut to that,” he said.

President Ruto has also stated that issues between the county government and his administration will be resolved amicably.

“We have a new governor in Nairobi. There are issues. He is trying to do things, some he gets right, but some he needs more consultation on,” Ruto said.
