Korogocho MCA Odhiambo To Remain in Custody

Korogocho MCA Absalom Odhiambo will remain in custody for another day to allow the court to determine whether he will be detained for seven days.

The legislator was arrested on Monday at the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) offices in Upper Hill, Nairobi, by DCI detectives over alleged incitement.

“Today, the Korogocho MCA honoured summons by NCIC, whereupon he was arrested and handed over to DCI (Directorate of Criminal Investigations) Nairobi area for further action,” the commission said.

Milimani principal magistrate Gilbert Shikwe on Tuesday said he needed more time to go through the application and submissions made by the parties before ruling on the matter.

The legislator will be held at the Central Police Station pending a ruling on Wednesday.

The police told the court that Mr Odhiambo made hateful remarks that could destabilize the country during an Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition party meeting last week.

The prosecution asked to detain the politician on grounds that he could interfere with witnesses should he be released.

“Based on the sensitivity of the allegations, if he is released on bail, he will interfere with witnesses. We are seeking this order knowing that the words uttered are a security threat,” the prosecution told the court.

The MCA is a habitual offender who intends to wreck havoc in the country through public addresses and social media, the police said.

“Kwa siasa ya taifa tunataka tutoke kwenda ikulu tutoe huyu mwizi, nataka tuingie town tufunge biashara, hakuna biashara itaendelea hii town ya Nairobi, ndio William Ruto (the President) aheshimu Raila Odinga. Lazima tufunge biashara hii town,” Odhiambo allegedly said.

According to the police, they need seven days to extract any potentially inciting communications from his phone and record statements to strengthen their case.

He is also said to be a flight risk.
