Raila’s Bodyguard Maurice Ogeta Released After Three Days in Custody

Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s bodyguard Maurice Ogeta has been released.

Ogeta was taken three days ago by individuals believed to be police officers. He was on his way to work when he was flagged down by unknown people and bundled into his vehicle.

ODM director of communication Philip Etale confirmed his release. He was abandoned in Ruai at around 1 am on Saturday.

“Maurice Ogeta, bodyguard of Raila Odinga was released from police custody a few minutes to 1:00am and driven while blindfolded and left in the middle of the road in Ruai towards Kangundo. His car is vandalized. However, he is happy to be alive but still distraught and in shock,” he said.

According to the police, Ogeta was being held at Utawala police cells over alleged involvement in the three-day protests.

The release came after Justice Lawrence Mugambi on Friday ordered that he be presented before any court in the country.

Mugambi further directed that responses on the matter be filed and served within three days after the order.

“That, pending the hearing and determination of this application inter-parties, a writ of habeus corpus is hereby issued directing the 2nd Respondent to produce Maurice Ogeta before a court of competent jurisdiction in Nairobi or any other Court within the Republic of Kenya for an inquiry into the issue of his detention,” the notice read.

The case will be mentioned on July 31.
