Activist Charged for Claiming Governor Nassir Used Public Funds to Throw Raila Birthday Party

A London-based activist has been charged for alleging that Mombasa county government used public funds to throw ODM leader Raila Odinga a birthday.

Mr Abdulmajid Ali Al Busayyid alias Dr Amkeni claimed that Governor Abdulswamad Nassir misappropriated funds meant for the disabled to host the birthday party.

The accused is facing several charges relating to publication of false information on his social media pages.

He is also said to have falsely accused Hassan Joho’s brother, Abubakar Joho, of drug trafficking and grabbing 60 acres of land at Hussein Dairy.

He is also accused of falsely claiming that Abubakar imported a consignment of weapons from Pakistan and Afghanistan through the Mombasa port.

The elder Joho apparently later sold the arms to the al-Shabaab militia group in Somalia.

The court heard that the accused falsely claiming that Mombasa Speaker Aharubi Ebrahim Khatri was nabbed in his house for being in possession illegal firearms and drugs.

Between March 9, 2021 and January this year, the accused person told his YouTube audience that Mr Khatri was part of a stolen vehicle syndicate in the United Kingdom.

Appearing before Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate Rita Orora, Mr Ali entered a not guilty plea.

Investigating Officer Abdulahi Hussein while opposing Mr Ali’s bond request, said police are yet to determine the true identity of the suspect.

The suspect, he said, has two passports bearing different names.

The officer told the court that the Kenyan passport identifies him as Abdulmajid Ali Al Busayyid while the British passport reads Qassim Issak Luqman.

“There is a need to ascertain the true identity, nationality, occupation and or details of the accused, and in particular, the circumstances leading to his possession of two different identities. This will require a multi-agency team cooperation that would include the British embassy,” Mr Hussein said.

The prosecution also supported the denial of bond application, saying that the suspect was a flight risk.

But Mr Ali still sought bail on grounds that he was sickly.

“I am a sick man, continuing detention is not tasteful. Police cells are not a five-star hotel, detaining me inside those cells amounts to a death sentence,” he said.

The court will rule on February 6.
