Bobi Wine Criticizes World Bank For Suspending Funding to Uganda

Uganda’s opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has criticized the World Bank for suspending funding to his country over its anti-homosexuality laws.

The musician turned politician stated in a statement that it was troubling that the World Bank only gave LGBT rights priority at the expense of other issues.

He charged that the World Bank has ignored every instance of human rights abuse in the East African country.

Bobi said the organization must respect all human rights equally.

“It’s disturbing how institutions like these ones give priority to only gay rights and ignore all the other gross human rights violations, including mass murder, torture, detention without charge, and undermining democracy by rigging elections. Dear World Bank, all human rights are human rights!” he said.

His remarks followed the World Bank’s announcement that it had effectively stopped providing any new funding to Uganda due to the country’s newly passed anti-homosexuality law.

The World Bank claimed that the law goes against its core principles and undermines its efforts to promote inclusivity.

“Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act fundamentally contradicts the World Bank Group’s values. We believe our vision to eradicate poverty on a livable planet can only succeed if it includes everyone irrespective of race, gender, or sexuality,” World Bank said on Wednesday.

“This law undermines those efforts. Inclusion and non-discrimination sit at the heart of our work around the world.”

The World Bank stated that it wants to safeguard sexual and gender minorities from prejudice and exclusion in the initiatives that they fund.
