DP Gachagua Urges Raila to Call Off Demos

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition party leader Raila Odinga to call off the mayhem witnessed on Monday.

The DP was speaking on Monday as he received 25,000 metric tonnes of wheat and 16,000 metric tonnes of sorghum from Ukraine and US, respectively.

Gachagua noted that the country has as a result of the demos lost at least Sh2 billion.

“We are happy that President William Ruto is in charge and has ensured that no life has been lost and no property has been destroyed,” said Gachagua.

He said he is happy most Kenyans ignored the illegal declaration of a holiday by Raila and have gone about their work as usual.

He claimed that the current upheaval will reverse the progress the country has achieved toward its economic recovery.

“But there are some who did open their shops in the CBD in Nairobi for fear of the protests. As a result, the country has lost about Sh2 billion in terms of business,” said the DP.

He added: “What they are doing is destroying the economy. We had started showing signs of recovery from the economic downturn.”

He, however, condemned Azimio leaders for asking Kenyans to take to the streets yet their kin are enjoying perks offered by their jobs.

“It is unfair to ask people’s children to go to the streets while your children are in EALA enjoying the perks of the job you gave them,” added the second-in-command.

Thus far, businesses have been closed, protesters and police officers injured and a number of politicians arrested for participating in the “illegal” protests.

Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo, Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, Malindi’s Amina Mnyazi and Ken Chonga of Kilifi South have been taken into custody.

In Nakuru, ODM regional Chair Benard Miruka, and former Nakuru County Assembly Speaker Joel Kairu were also arrested.
