DR Congo Abolishes Visa Requirements for Kenyans

There will be no longer be a visa requirement for Kenyans to enter the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

On Wednesday, the DRC removed visa requirements for Kenyans entering the country.

The announcement came five days after Kenya stated that DRC nationals visiting Kenya would not need a visa.

The Directorate General of Migration in the DRC said in a statement on Wednesday that the decision took effect on September 1, 2023, the same day Kenya lifted its visa requirements for Congo.

Director-general of immigration, Evelyn Cheluget, in a circular dated August 25, said the requirements were lifted in line with a presidential directive.

“The government has removed DRC from category 2 to category 1 of the visa requirement in compliance with the East Africa Community,” the circular read.

In August, President William Ruto lifted visa requirements for Indonesia, making it the third nation in that month to get a visa-free travel policy announcement from the government.

In July, the government announced a visa-free travel policy for the Comoros and Senegal.

In February, Eritrea and Kenya decided to end the need for visas for their people.

To promote trade between the two nations, Kenya and Djibouti lobbied for a visa-free policy in June.

Last year in November, Kenyans holding ordinary passports were granted visa-free entry to South Africa.
