Duncan Githiga, Running for Kangema MP 20 Years On

Duncan Githiga has been running for the Kangema parliamentary seat for the past 20 years, but his lack of success has not dampened his spirits.

Githiga, who is running on the Usawa kwa Wote party ticket, is one of the six candidates vying for the seat in the August 9 elections.

The trained accountant believes he is the ideal candidate to succeed outgoing member of parliament Muturi Kigano, promising to alter the leadership and transform the lives of the people.

He ran for the seat on a KANU ticket in 2002, but lost to the late John Michuki.

He took a sabbatical in 2007 and returned in 2012, when he lost the primaries for The National Alliance (TNA) party. He alleged that the primaries were rigged against him hence his bowing out of the race.

His attempt to win a Jubilee party ticket was thwarted in 2017, again. He did not seek an alternate party to compete for the seat.

Githiga is optimistic that this time he will win and carry out his agenda for the people of Kangema.

“I have been in the public and private sectors and I have acquired a lot of knowledge which I can use to help transform the lives of Kangema residents,” he said.

He stated that if elected, he will bring back Michuki’s leadership style, noting that the late legislator was able to fight for the interests of his constituents and that many development projects were started during his tenure.

“I always admired his style of leadership and I would like to follow in the footsteps of this man (the late Michuki). He was the best we will ever have,” he remarked.

He stated that he is running for the seat to help lead development for the residents of Kangema, adding that the area has been on the decline and that something needs to be done about it.

Education is at the top of his agenda, he says, and he plans to change the sector to improve outcomes for students.

“I have a plan to boost the education standards in the area where we will be able to produce learners who are equipped with skills to make them self-reliant,” he stated.

“Education in Kangema has been on a downward trend. I want to change the situation,” he added.

He stated he will focus on the tea, coffee, and dairy industries to make them more profitable for the inhabitants who rely on them for a living.

His objective, he said, is to resurrect the Mt Kenya parliamentary group, which will help advocate for better legislation to help farmers make more money.

If elected as the area MP, he plans to focus on small businesses, infrastructure, and the youth, among other issues.

Outside of politics, he has been involved in a number of projects aimed at empowering locals, including the construction of tea collection centers for farmers, the establishment of table banking for women’s groups, and pushing for water and energy projects in various locations.

“All the projects I have done for the people are out of goodwill and passion but I’m now looking for an opportunity to serve them better,” he said.

Githiga holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting, a master’s degree in business administration, and a doctorate in business administration. He has worked with KCB, East Africa Industries, East Africa Portland Cement, and Premier Dairies in Kericho, among others.

He has also been on the boards of directors of the Kenya Medical Training Centre and the Agriculture Finance Corporation. For the past 11 years, he has worked as a facilitator for corporate governance and leadership.

“One of my biggest achievements was to revive the Premier dairies factory which was almost collapsing. It is still running to date,” he said.

He is also a partner in the Githiga Mwangi and Associates Company.
