EACC Probe Meant To Intimidate Me into Joining Gov’t – Oparanya

Former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya now says the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) investigation against him is politically motivated.

The ODM deputy party leader said the probe is meant to woo him to the government side. He, however, maintained that he would remain in the opposition.

Oparanya alleged that the government has unsuccessfully attempted to convince him to leave the Raila Odinga-led Azimio-One Kenya Coalition.

“Kenya Kwanza wants me to join the government and abandon the opposition. Ruto has Mudavadi and Wetangula. Let him stick to them and leave me alone,” he said in Vihiga.

The former county boss maintained that no amount of intimidation would make him abandon his party leader.

Oparanya was apprehended by EACC sleuths on Wednesday last week alongside his wife Priscilla over alleged embezzlement of Sh1.3 billion during his tenure.

Raila condemned the arrest terming it a witch-hunt.

The opposition chief said the fight against graft should be neutral and devoid of politics.

The former prime minister noted that probe into corrupt dealings should not target those opposing the government of the day.

“This is a witch-hunt and an afterthought. Oparanya has been in office and he’s left…..the authorities can now only come after him after there is an audit…you don’t get EACC coming out of the blue carrying out investigations. What sort of investigations are they carrying out?” he posed.

“He (Oparanya) finished his job and handed it over a year ago, he is no longer in office. So we are now dealing with a post mortem and during a post-mortem, you don’t need to come after anyone. There should be audit accounts which show some kind of wrongdoing.”

He urged the anti-graft agency to look into corrupt dealings within the government.
