Former SA President Zuma Freed After Completing Prison Term

Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been released following the completion of his prison term for contempt of court, the government department announced on Friday.

Zuma was handed a 15-month term last year after refusing to comply with requests to take part in a corruption investigation.

The former head of state turned himself in on July 7 of last year which led to his enraged followers taking to the streets.

The riots led to the worst violence Mzansi had witnessed in the last couple of years.

“It’s OFFICIAL. H.E President Zuma is now a FREE man,” the Jacob Zuma Foundation tweeted on Friday.

In September 2021, he was released on medical parole. However, the supreme court overturned the parole judgment in December and mandated that he be sent back to prison.

Zuma challenged the decision and was allowed to remain on parole pending the outcome. His appeal was still pending by the time his sentence expired.

“Mr Zuma complied with his conditions for medical parole as set out during his placement,” the Correctional Services department said in a statement.
