Fuming Wanjigi Out of Presidential Race Over Lack of Degree Certificate

Safina party presidential candidate Jimi Wanjigi will not be in the race to State House come August 9.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati said the presidential hopeful did not submit a physical copy of his university degree.

The aspirant also lacked the substantive signatures and some Identity Cards had some irregularities.

“We have allowed others who have problems with signatures to harmonize, and we can also allow you in the remaining hours to do so,” Chebukati said.

“But you must bring a physical copy of your degree certificate before I clear you,” he added.

According to Chebukati, Wanjigi attached transcripts of his education, despite the fact that the requirements require each candidate to provide a certificate from a recognized institution in the country.

Wanjigi’s running mate Willis Otieno claimed presidential candidate Walter Mong’are aka Nyambane was cleared to participate in the contest yet he lacked the requisite document.

Reading malice in the electoral body’s decision, Wanjigi said there is an elaborate ploy to lock out certain aspirants. He alleged that Chebukati was applying the rules discriminatively.

Agreeing with his sentiments was Thirdway Alliance’s Ekuru Aukot who was on Sunday disqualified from the race to State House.

“Pole Sana @JimiWanjigi the shenanigans you have gone through @IEBCKenya is unjust. & Yes I agree with you the there is deliberate efforts to lock out Aspirants. That Kiburi tutakomesha They must follow the law unless they want to throw the country into chaos,” said Aukot via Twitter.

Aukot was locked out of the race over lack of supporter signatures. He said he did not submit the 48,000 signatures on purpose.

“No Kenyan is willing to give you his ID card to photocopy, let us be realistic.

“I’m even wondering where the cleared candidates got the photocopied ID cards of Kenyans from,” he said.

“People want to be bribed so that they can give you their ID cards to photocopy.”
