Kiambu Woman Rep Aspirant Chania Released on Sh1 Million Bond in Husband’s Murder Case

Kiambu politician Gladys Chania has been released on a Sh1 million bond and a surety of the same amount.

Chania is accused of killing her husband, George Mwangi, alongside her farmhand Maurice Mbugua.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had sought to detain the accused persons for seven more days to allow more time for investigations.

Kiambu senior resident magistrate Wilson Rading, however, declined the application.

The two were arrested on October 14 after the body of the deceased was discovered in Kieni Forest wrapped in polythene and cartons stacked on top of it.

They were detained for seven days to allow police time to probe the matter.

According to the DCI, the politician who unsuccessfully vied for the Kiambu Woman Rep seat, planned her husband’s murder after learning about his extramarital affair.

The deceased, a Rwanda-based contractor, is said to have been dating a secretary at a local school. The woman has since been identified as Lucy Muthoni.

Ms Chania apparently carried out the murder with the help of a new employee and others.

Multiple sources told the police that their 20-year union was in shambles hence the affair with Ms Muthoni. Their relationship was an open secret.

“However, according to multiple sources, their union seemed to have been undergoing turbulent times since the woman would mostly spend her time at their Thika home while Mwangi would stay at the splendid five-bedroomed Mang’u residence whenever he was in the country,” said DCI.

The affair started shortly after he met Muthoni who was at the time hunting for a rental apartment. He offered her a house next to his home.

The two are said to have spent a lot of time together anytime he was in the country.

“Some of the family members intimated to detectives that the deceased had introduced the woman to his family as his second wife and she was well known to the extended family,” continued DCI.

On the day he was last seen alive, Mwangi was in the company of his new love interest. They attended a family gathering in Kimunyu. Chania was also in attendance.

After the family function, the father of three and Muthoni headed back to Mang’u where he found Chania.

His body was later found in Kieni Forest, wrapped in black polythene under a heap of cartons and empty bags of cement.

Sleuths believe that the suspect placed a call to the police and filed a missing person’s report after dumping the body.
