There was drama at the Jubilee Party headquarters in Kileleshwa on Wednesday after two rival groups clashed over the party leadership.
The warring groups are said to be allied to EALA MP Kanini Kega and former Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni.
This came as a result of the Political Parties Tribunal’s decision to uphold the NEC resolution that declared Kega the secretary general.
The National Executive Committee meeting notification that was sent on February 2 and the subsequent NEC meeting that imposed Kega on February 10 were both done in conformity with the party Constitution, the tribunal ruled on April 16.

In rendering its decision, the tribunal found that Kioni had failed to first seek a resolution of the dispute regarding the NEC meeting before the Party’s Internal Dispute Resolution Committee (IDRC).
“In the upshot, we decline the invitation to issue a declaration of invalidity of the notice issued by the interested party dated February 2, 2023, the agenda, resolutions and letter dated February 10, 2023,” the tribunal ruled.
The tribunal determined that a letter from the Registrar of Political Parties dated February 13 that acknowledged Kega’s appointment as the new SG was illegal.
It claimed that the Registrar did not act in line with the Political Parties Act, which stipulates that before giving any instructions, a subject that is pending before a party’s internal dispute resolution process must first be heard and decided.
