IEBC To Investigate Moses Kuria Over Election Rigging Claims

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is poised to probe remarks made by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, which appeared to insinuate that votes were rigged in favor of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Chairman Wafula Chebukati made the announcement during CEO Marjan Hussein’s swearing-in on Wednesday.

“We are aware of what he said but people always have their versions of what they said. So our investigation team is probing before we summon him,” Chebukati said.

The Gatundu South MP said that he and other political figures helped rig in Uhuru. He made the allegations during DP William Ruto’s National Delegates Convention held at the Kasarani Stadium on Tuesday.

Kuria said that he manipulated the election in Uhuru’s favor with the help of others who are now aligned with DP Ruto’s camp.

“Kuna wengine wanasema ati kura ya mlima itagawanywa; mheshimiwa Ann Waiguru, Rigathi Gachagua, Muthomi Njuki, Kimani Ichung’wa, Senator Linturi, Alice Wahome, Faith Gitau, Kimani wa Matangi…Sisi ndio tulikuwa tukishikilia Uhuru kura, na sisi ndio tulikuwa tunamuibia kura,” Kuria stated.

The legislator who is eyeing the Kiambu governor’s seat has, however, claimed that it was a slip of the tongue.

Taking to Facebook, Kuria said he meant “tuliimba (sing)” which can be confused to mean “kuiba (steal)”.

“Ben Githae is my witness. Tuliimbia Uhuru Ndani Ndani Ndaani mpaka akashinda,” he said.

Jubilee Vice Chair David Murathe told Citizen TV that the lawmaker’s utterances should be probed.

He claimed that the President ran a well-choreographed campaign that saw them win the election fairly, and that the charges of vote manipulation are something they are unaware of.

“Moses Kuria should go to IEBC together with the people he mentioned and explain how the rigging happened; we are not aware of any rigging that took place,” Murathe told News Night.

He added: “If the IEBC establishes there was rigging, those are crimes which people should be prosecuted. If he has any evidence that we rigged or they rigged or that there was rigging, he should be in jail.”

Also in trouble with the electoral agency is Murang’a Woman Rep Sabina Chege who told Vihiga people that the elections had been manipulated in favour of the president.

“I have heard others saying we rigged, there is some truth in it. So if we managed to rig, even this one we can. They think they are the smartest,” she said.

The matter is before the agency but was postponed after it emerged that the legislator had fallen sick.
