Jakoyo’s Brother Jalang’o Denies Being Favoured by ODM

Dr Jalang’o Midiwo has defended himself against accusations of being favored by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following a direct nomination.

Dr Midiwo commended the party for recognizing the anomalies that led to Mr Elisha Odhiambo being proclaimed the winner in the party primaries.

Speaking a day after the party’s National Elections Board (NEB) handed him a direct ticket, the Gem MP aspirant stated that his nomination has brought justice to the electorate whose victory had been ‘stolen.’

Mr Odhiambo garnered 7,405 votes against Dr Midiwo’s 6,384 votes.

“We managed to prove to the party that the April 13 party primary was marred with irregularities, including voter bribery and intimidation against my supporters,” he said.

Dr Midiwo, who celebrated his win on Friday before hosting a homecoming party at his parents’ home in Mabinju, said he will now concentrate on winning the Gem parliamentary seat.

“I am now calling on my worthy opponents to put our differences aside and work towards ensuring the victory of our party leader Raila Odinga,” he said.

He urged supporters to rally behind his bid and Raila Odinga, the presidential candidate of the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Coalition party.

A number of ODM ward representative candidates accompanied Dr Midiwo.

On Thursday, Dr Midiwo was declared the winner, four days after the ODM Central Committee overturned a dispute tribunal verdict that confirmed Mr Odhiambo’s candidacy as the party’s validly elected candidate.

Last Sunday, the crucial organ ordered NEB to issue a direct ticket in accordance with Rule 8 (b) of the party primaries and nominations procedures.

This comes after the party disputes resolution tribunal convened by Mr Frederick Orego upheld Mr Odhiambo’s nomination, stating that the process was fair and transparent.

The panel stated that their conclusion was based on the Supreme Court’s judgement in Presidential Petition Number One of 2017, filed by Mr Raila Odinga against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

According to the court’s decision, errors in the electoral process can invalidate an election result if they have an impact on the results.
