Kanu Suspends Secretary General Nick Salat

The Kenya African National Union (Kanu) party has suspended its secretary general Nick Salat.

In a statement by party chairman Gideon Moi, the former Bomet East MP has been suspended following a meeting by the National Executive Council (NEC) on December 15.

Salat has been accused of misconduct and violation of party constitution.

Mr Moi on Thursday said Salat will face the party disciplinary committee which will in 30 days finalize the matter.

“This is to notify you that in the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on December 15, several complaints on your conduct and violation of the party constitution were placed before members for discussion,” reads the letter to Salat.

“While noting that the complaints on their face appeared serious, the jurisdiction to deal with matters constituting disciplinary measures lies with the disciplinary committee created under Article 34 of the constitution.”

The former Baringo senator adds that in exercise of the NEC’s mandate under Article 15 of the Constitution, the council resolved to refer the matter to the disciplinary committee “as provided under Article 7.2 (a) (iii) of the constitution.”

However, Salat pronounced the suspension “null and void,” saying that Mr Moi lacks such authority.

He claimed that the council did not recommend his suspension as purported by Mr Moi.

“Both Chairman and I are serving on interim basis, where does he get such powers to suspend me?” he wondered.

Salat has been at odds with the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition party leadership since he missed out on an EALA nomination.

Weeks ago, the former lawmaker said Kanu would hold a meeting with its members to discuss a way forward after being left out of key coalition issues.

This he said as he asserted that Kanu would not be part of the “people’s consultative forum” planned by ODM leader Raila Odinga.

“We will not support that. We would love to but our treatment in the coalition does not allow us to do that,” Mr Salat said.

“We are looking at redefining our relationship with Azimio. When it comes to inclusivity, the coalition only considers the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Wiper.”
