Governor Kawira Declines to Appear in Assembly as MCAs Vote on Her Impeachment

The governor of Meru Kawira Mwangaza has declared that she will not be in the county assembly on Wednesday while MCAs vote to remove her from office.

The governor is expected to address the charges leveled against her during debate in the assembly, either personally or through her lawyers.

If the high court in Meru does not step in, the impeachment motion brought by minority whip and Abogeta West MCA Dennis Kiogora is scheduled to be presented, discussed, and voted on today.

Last Monday, the embattled county chief submitted a plea to the court asking that the assembly not be allowed to discuss her impeachment.

Justice Thripisa Cherere is expected to issue a ruling this morning.

Addressing residents of Kathatene, Igembe Central on Tuesday, the former Woman Representative taunted the MCAs to vote for her impeachment to the last man.

“They are now threatening to kick me out of office. If that is the plan, I declare that they will go before me. I will not go to the assembly because I will be busy meeting the people,” she said.

The governor asserted that there was no supporting evidence for the claims leveled against her. She also noted that she was not afraid of being impeached.

“The office of the governor is not established through a piece of paper so that you discard it at your whims. It is unheard of to impeach a governor after just two months in office. What have I done?” she posed.

According to the former County MP, the Ward Reps only plotted to oust her because she declined to establish a ward fund.

This she said as she noted that she had tried to dialogue with the legislators but they had turned against her.

“We were not elected to be cowards. They cannot remove me from office. I will guard the resources of Meru with all my ability. I will make Meru a model county in terms of development,” she said, adding that UDA’s chairman Johnson Muthama had tried to mediate but his efforts were shot down by the lawmakers.

“I want to thank Mr Muthama for trying to intervene but the MCAs said they cannot meet without MPs. I cannot beg them on my knees if they do not want to work with me.”

She is facing impeachment over alleged gross misconduct, gross violation of various national and county laws, abuse of office, among others.

Last week, 68 of 69 MCAs approved the impeachment motion brought forward by Mr Kiogora.
