Three Mathira Chiefs Claim To Have Received Threatening Calls From DP Gachagua

Chiefs serving in deputy president Rigathi Gachagua’s locality have claimed to have received calls from the second-in-command threatening them with sacking.

The two chiefs – George Mukabi, Dadson Ithiru and assistant chief Burton Chiuma – told the Nation that the former Mathira MP called them on Monday night.

According to the administrators, the DP castigated them for working with the previous regime led by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.

One of the administrator’s under siege told the daily that the call came in at around 9.20pm. Though it was brief, the DP allegedly told them to start looking for an alternative source of income because they would soon be unemployed.

“When I finally picked the call, it was a familiar voice of his Excellency the deputy president. He started by informing me that he had information that I was among those who were supporting Azimio during the elections. The call was short, and he ended by asking me how many years are left before I retire…” the administrator is quoted by the daily.

“He informed me that in the meantime, I should be looking for something else to do because I will be going home. I could not start arguing with such a senior person. However, I tried to explain myself, but he could hear none of it.”

The chiefs, however, clarified that they were yet to receive formal communication from their employer but stated that they have notified Mathira East deputy county commissioner Mr Peter Gicheha about the phone calls.

The chiefs stated that the DP could have been fed false information about them hence the phonecalls.

“As administrators our duty is to support the government of the day. We are now under the Kenya Kwanza government, and we must propagate the government’s agenda and policies and we are very loyal to the government. I think there are some politicians who are against us for some reason we are not aware of,” said Mr Mukabi

Mr Gicheha on his part said he had received the complaints from the chiefs but is treating them as “personal issues” between them and DP Gachagua.

He said that he was yet to receive official communication from the deputy president.

“The chiefs are in a better position to tell you what happened. They told me they were called, but the DP has not called me.”

In the run up to the August 2022 general elections, DP Gachagua took issue with then Interior CS Fred Matiang’i for the alleged misuse of local authorities.

In July, Gachagua said the work of the chiefs is to deal with boundary issues, write letters for identification cards and find wives who ran away.

Their work, he said, was not to campaign for then Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

“Your (chiefs) work entails settling land boundary disputes, stamping letters for Kenyans who have lost their identity cards and ensuring that a man whose wife has run away, is reunited with the spouse. Aren’t these the only responsibilities that are assigned to a chief?” he wondered.
