Trade CS Nominee Moses Kuria Is Worth Sh750 Million

Trade, Investment and Industry Cabinet Secretary nominee Moses Kuria has disclosed that he is worth Sh750 million.

The former Gatundu South MP made the revelation when he appeared before the Committee on Appointments for vetting on Tuesday evening.

“My financial net worth is Ksh.750 million. My net worth comprises of real estate developments, shares held in unlisted companies in my business concerns, manufacturing, fintech, and in the energy sector,” he said.

Kuria was challenged to explain his alleged polarizing political tendencies and how they would affect his role if the vetting committee approved him.

“Any perceived extremism or divisiveness on my side has been shaped by the kind of political culture we have had. Going forward, I am going to play my role in ensuring that we have a culture where political competition is not enmity,” he added.

Kuria defended his propensity for using foul language by claiming that he grew up during a time of political polarization.

He told the MPs that early exposure to politics shaped him into a controversial individual. This he said as he revealed that while attending the University of Nairobi, he served as treasurer for the student body.

“I was politically exposed from that point. I grew up under the wings of the late Kenneth Matiba and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga,” he said.

He added: “So let me say that any perceived extremism or divisiveness on my side has been shaped by the kind of political culture I have had.”

“I started working with the team of Matiba and Oginga as part of the Sabasaba movement. I was there at Kamukunji when we were fighting for the removal of Section 2(a) when I was only 21 years old.”

The former legislator emphasized that many people, both inside and outside of political circles, were impacted during the said period.

“The division that characterised this country also shaped many people, it’s a reality. It can only be my hope and desire that all of us collectively will be able to graduate to a better political culture,” he said.

According to the former MP, most political figures have said and done things to one another for which they should apologize.

He committed to helping Kenya’s political culture change so that opposition is not fostered by political rivalry.

Kuria went on to claim that he has been misrepresented in several contexts, including the media and even elite societies. He claimed that he is well-known as a cohesion-focused, peace-loving person in majority parts of the country.

“As I can say in some regions like Kondele, I’m the second-most popular person after (ODM leader) Raila Odinga,” he said.
