Mutula Kilonzo Jnr: Lawyer, Legislator and Second Makueni Governor

Mutula Kilonzo Junior is a Kenyan politician and the immediate former senator for Makueni county.

Following the passing of his father Mutula Kilonzo, Kilonzo Jr., a member and vice chair of the Wiper Democratic Movement, was elected as the second senator of Makueni County in a by-election in July 2013.

He served for two terms after which he successfully succeeded Kivutha Kibwana to become the second governor for Makueni.

Family

Kilonzo Jnr was born in 1975 in Mbooni, Makueni County to his late father and his first wife.

Kilonzo Jnr is a brother to Kethi Kilonzo and Wanza Kilonzo.

He has stepbrothers namely; Mutune, Muathi Kilonzo, Michael Musembi and Musau.

The lawyer is married to Anita Kilonzo with whom he shares two children.

Education

Kilonzo Jnr completed his secondary studies in Machakos County at Kathiani High School.

He then attended Dr. Ambedkar College in Nagpur is where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Law.

Career and Politics

Kilonzo Jnr is a professional lawyer and a certified public secretary and serves as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

Additionally, he is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

In 1995, Kilonzo Jnr started working for his father’s law firm, Kilonzo and Company Advocates, as an apprentice.

In 2001, he was made an associate.

He shot to the limelight in July 2013 after his father passed away while still in office.

After his sister, Kethi, the preferred candidate to succeed their father, was disqualified from running for office by the IEBC on grounds that she was not a registered voter, Kilonzo Jnr was chosen as the Wiper Party flagbearer.

In August 2022, he became the second Makueni governor.
