Narc Kenya Muthara MCA Aspirant Kathiai Arrested For Defrauding Nakuru M-Pesa Agent of Sh64,000

A Narc Kenya MCA candidate for Meru County’s Muthara ward has been detained on suspicion of scamming an M-Pesa shop in Nakuru County.

According to Rift Valley Regional Director of Criminal Investigations Meme Mwenda, Benson Thuranira Kathiai was one of three people arrested in a police operation after a report was made about the loss of Sh64,000 from the agent.

Michael Andai, alias Mike, and Shadrack Otieno, alias Shida, are the other two suspects.

They are thought to be members of the illegal criminal organization named “Confirm”, which operates in Nakuru’s Kivumbini, Rhonda, and Flamingo wards and is involved in mobile money fraud.

Robbery, phone snatching, mugging, and violent attacks in slum neighborhoods are all suspected to be perpetrated by the group.

Mr Kathiai has similar cases in other sections of the county, said the police boss.

The Ward Representative aspirant holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Mount Kenya University.

He is said to have entered the M-Pesa shop and asked the agent to deposit Sh64,000, Mr Mwenda told reporters.

However, he tampered with his phone to prevent it from displaying the confirmation message and requested his money back.

“The agent, upon checking her balance, realised that the money had already been sent. She raised the alarm and our officers traced the suspect before arresting him,” he said.

The suspect has two other cases in Shauri Moyo, Nairobi and Busia, where he defrauded a woman of 60 bags of groundnuts and Sh60,000, said the investigative authorities.

He allegedly duped a businesswoman out of Sh120,000 in Meru, as well as defrauding others in Mwea and Mombasa.

According to the cops, the suspect informed them he needed money to fund his political campaigns.

He will be arraigned on Friday.
