Nyamira MCAs Threaten to Oust Governor Nyaribo

Members of Nyamira County Assembly (MCAs) have threatened to impeach Governor Amos Nyaribo.

The motion has been approved by 28 out of 34 Ward Representatives.

According to Township ward MCA and deputy majority leader, Duke Masira, the legislators want Nyaribo to resign or face impeachment over a Sh37 million drugs scandal.

Masira also noted that MCAs have lost faith in Nyaribo over abuse of power.

“We want the Senate to establish whether Nyaribo will continue being governor. He claimed that only boxes were delivered instead of drugs, we want him to be investigated,” said the deputy majority leader.

The scandal saw the governor sack Health CEC Timothy Ombati last week after a 30-day compulsory leave.

“Your services to Nyamira County Government as a County Executive Member are hereby terminated and you are dismissed from service with effect from the date of this letter,” a letter dated July 13 and addressed to Ombati reads in part.

But according to the lawmakers, the governor should have fired chief officer.

“We do not have any drugs in any of the facilities. Even the one they told us they had delivered, we have not see anything there. And that is why our people are running away from our facilities to the clinics that we have around here,” said Deputy Speaker Thaddeus Nyabaro.

The MCAs want the governor to resign and allow the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to probe the alleged graft.

Ombati has since moved to court on grounds that he was unlawfully sacked. He wants the governor to reinstate him.
