ODM South Gem Ward Rep Candidate Nick Wanga is Dead

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) suffered a loss on Saturday after its South Gem ward candidate died.

Nick Wanga passed away this morning about 6 am at the Agha Khan hospital in Kisumu, family spokesperson Abala Wanga said.

Abala, the city manager of Kisumu, said that his younger brother passed away while receiving medical attention at the hospital where he had been admitted for three days.

“It is a sad day for us as a family to lose a young man who had a bright future ahead of him,” he said.

The aspiring ward representative is said to have succumbed to cerebral malaria.

“He was fine. He was part of the team that met Jalang’o Midiwo at his home to discuss the way forward for the Gem constituency politics,” he said.

The late Wanga met with his campaign secretariat on Sunday to set out ideas for winning the South Gem ward seat.

Preparations for the funeral, according to the family spokesman, will be announced later.

“The body is lying at the Agha Khan Hospital as we begin meetings to plan for the burial,” he said.

Wanga unsuccessfully ran for the seat in 2013 and 2017 after losing the ODM ticket on both occasions.

Family and friends remembered as a visionary leader who sacrificed a lot to see his people succeed.

Jalang’o Midiwo, one of the Gem leaders who offered condolence messages, said the people of South Gem had lost a committed and devoted leader.

The party also condoled with the bereaved family noting that Wanga passed on only 32 days to the polls.

“We are saddened by the death of Hon. Nick Wanga, our candidate for the South Gem Ward seat in Gem Constituency of Siaya County early today,” tweeted the party.

“It is sad that Nick has passed on 32 days to the General Election. We pray for the family and the people of South Gem during this trying moment.”
