OKA Agreement Signing Postponed Until Week

The signing ceremony for the One Kenya Alliance’s coalition agreement, which was slated for Wednesday morning, March 2, has been canceled.

OKA leaders stated during a joint press conference that the event had to be postponed due to new demands from the Narc Kenya party led by Martha Karua.

Karua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, KANU leader Gideon Moi, and UDM’s Cyrus Jirongo were present during the briefing. They all reaffirmed the coalition’s agreement to work together ahead of the polls.

“We were to sign our coalition agreement today but we have postponed to polish certain legal issues. Nevertheless, we are committed to our unity. We shall be letting you know the time we shall sign the agreement,” the OKA principals said.

“We still are open to receive other parties that we are talking to into the OKA coalition and to building coalitions with other Kenyans.”

Karua had asked OKA for an additional seven days to consider the accord before making a decision.

On Tuesday, Narc Kenya’s Secretary-General Michael Orwa told the press that the party had directed its attorneys to seek clarification on current grey areas before preparing and presenting a formal brief to the NEC (NEC).

“The party received the final text of the proposed coalition agreement and supporting papers from the OKA technical team within the previous 36 hours,” Orwa said.

The secretary general went on to say that after receiving the document, the NEC will deliberate before approving it.

“For instance, we have the coalition political parties and we need to understand the implication of signing such an agreement,” he stated.

“We also need to find out if a coalition can join other political coalitions.”

This comes days after Kalonzo announced his intention to join the Azimio la Umoja political party, which is linked to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

To bolster his base of support, the former vice president went ahead and revealed the National Super Alliance’s secret arrangement (NASA).

Regardless of whether NASA won the 2017 General Election, the ODM leader was obligated to support his Presidential run in 2022, Kalonzo said about the memorandum of understanding.

“I’m giving you copies and I will just read out a few paragraphs. And understand that this document, by its nature, was supposed to be a secret. However, I have explained to the parties the need to make things clear,” said the Wiper leader.

“As we begin the fresh rounds of the negotiation process leading to the August election, I have been compelled to release the above document in order to answer some of the criticism labelled against me, quote as being the indecisive kingmaker.”
