Politicians Hired Corpses During Anti-government Protests – IG Koome

Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome has claimed that politicians hired dead bodies during the anti-government protests.

The IG on Tuesday claimed that the senior politicians who he did not name hired the corpses and then blamed police officers for the deaths.

“It is so unfortunate that some senior members of the society go to the mortuary hiring dead bodies, calling the media and telling them that these people were killed by the police. How low can some of our leaders sink?” posed Koome.

The opposition claimed that at least 50 people had been killed during the protests.

The police boss also told off those threatening to take him to the International Criminal Court (ICC) over alleged police brutality witnessed during the protests.

Koome said he will not be intimidated as he insisted that the police have a duty to protect Kenyans.

“Propaganda headliners will not scare us. They can continue to threaten us of going to ICC court and that has no implication on us in terms of our commitment to serve and protect our country,” he said.

“I want to tell Kenyans that as National Police Service, we have a role to protect life and property. We have a responsibility to ensure our country is secure and safe and it is a mandate we are going to discharge without fear or favour,” he added.

Last month, National Assembly Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi asked the Hague to take an interest in the cases of police brutality during anti-government protests.

“We have noticed an unprecedented level of police brutality on innocent Kenyans. We want the international community to take serious note of these happenings to hold into account the perpetrators of these crimes,” he said.

“We are asking the ICC to take a keener interest in the Kenyan situation because what we are witnessing is crimes against humanity.”
