President Museveni Says Son To Stay Off Twitter After “Invasion” Remarks

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has said that his son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, will stay off Twitter when it comes to State affairs.

“He will leave Twitter. We have this discussion. Twitter is not a problem. The problem is what you are tweeting about,” the head of state told a local Ugandan TV station.

He, however, noted that the General could still tweet as long as he restricted himself to matters Sports, for example.

“Talking about other countries and partisan politics of Uganda is something he should not do and he will not do it,” he added.

Last week, Muhoozi apologized to President William Ruto after a social media tirade in which he threatened to invade Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.

In a tweet, the General said he has never had a problem with Kenya’s fifth president.

“I have never had any problem with Afande Ruto. If I made a mistake anywhere, I ask him to forgive me as his young brother. God bless East Africa,” he tweeted.

A fortnight ago, his father (Museveni) had apologized to Kenyans over the tweets that sparked anger among Twitter users.

“I ask our Kenyan brothers and sisters to forgive us for tweets sent by General Muhoozi, former Commander of Land Forces here, regarding the election matters in that great country.  It is not correct for Public officers, be they civilian or military, to comment or interfere in any way, in the internal affairs of brother countries,” said Museveni in a statement.

He added: “The only available legitimate forum is the Peer Review Mechanism  of  the  African  Union  or  confidential interactions  among  us  or  EAC  and  AU  fora –not public comments.”

Earlier, the Ugandan government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs distanced itself from Muhoozi’s tweets that strained relations between herself and Kenya.

The Ministry reaffirmed in a statement that the government does not carry out its foreign policy duties on social media.

According to the Museveni-led government, the relationships are built on a common history, shared ideals, and mutual admiration, confidence, and the ambition to create an East African Community.

Nevertheless, the Ugandan president referred to his son as a “very good general” after stripping him of his role as leader of Uganda’s land forces.
