Race for Nairobi Governor Hots Up as Governor Kananu Throws Hat in the Ring

The race for Nairobi Governor hots up after the incumbent Anne Kananu declared interest in defending her seat.

Kananu took over the reins on November 16, 2021 as Nairobi’s third and first female Governor after Mike Sonko’s impeachment in 2020.

Declaring her interest in the seat, Kananu stated that her silence should not be mistaken for weakness.

She said: “For those who think that I’m weak, I have tasted and I’m living it and I want to tell them that I’m here to stay.”

“Let us meet pale kwa uwanja pamoja, tushindane lakini tuhakikishe ( lets us meet in the ballot and compete but ensure) that whatever we are doing is for the good of Nairobians and for the people.”

As 2022 politics take shape, the race for City Hall has so far attracted aspirants including; Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, Makadara MP George Aladwa, former Starehe MP Bishop Margaret Wanjiru,  Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja, Businesswoman Agnes Kagure, President for Kenya National Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KNCCI), Richard Ngatia and Governor Kananu.

MP Wanyonyi is, however, the only one who has publicly declared his bid. Should he run under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, he will face off with Makadara MP George Aladwa for the ticket.

Aladwa is expected to announce his bid later this month.

“I want to make it clear that I will be in the race and I am doing it for the people because they want me to move to the next level,” said Aladwa.
