Raila Names 7-member Panel to Assess Possible Running Mates

Raila Odinga, the presidential candidate of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance, has formed a seven-member council to advise him on who he should choose as his running mate.

The panel comprises of clergy men and officials from political parties, said Azimio Council secretary-general Junet Mohamed.

They are; Bishop Peter Njenga, Archbishop Zaccheus Okoth, Senator Enock Wambua, Michael Orwa, Noah Wekesa, Sheik Mohamed Khalifa, and Beatrice Moe.

“The panel shall reach its decision through consensus and shall elect its chairperson. The secretary of the panel shall be Ms Elizabeth Meyo,” said Junet.

The Suna East MP also noted that the panel has agreed to take up the roles and deliver their new mandate.

The 7-member team has up to May 10, to submit the name of a person suitable for the running mate position.

“Eligible candidates must demonstrate respect for the people, bring honour to the people and dignity to the office, promote public confidence in the integrity of the office and demonstrate the value that nomination to the office is a responsibility to serve the people rather than the power to rule them,” said Junet.

“They must also demonstrate personal integrity in public and private life, impartiality in decision making, selfless service based solely on public interest, accountability to the public and discipline and commitment in service of the people.

“The vetting of candidates and the subsequent nomination of a candidate for this critical post is thus a matter of the utmost national importance to be undertaken in the spirit of inclusivity, fostering both party and national unity, transparency, the principles of good governance and drawing from the collective wisdom of eminent Kenyan’s of goodwill and experience in diverse leadership positions.”

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Tuesday pushed the deadline for presidential aspirants to name their running mates to May 16.

Narc, an affiliate party of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance has already submitted the name of its party leader, Charity Ngilu for vetting and consideration as Raila’s running mate.

“As a pioneering affiliate member of the said coalition, it gives us pleasure to submit the name of our Party leader Charity Ngilu for vetting, evaluation and consideration aforesaid,” said Narc Secretary-general Fidelis Nguuli.
