Reprieve for Governor Kawira as Court Bars Impeachment Motion

An impeachment motion against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been put on hold by the Meru High Court.

Justice Wamae Cherere ruled on Wednesday, that the Meru County Assembly did not follow the correct procedure when initiating the motion.

Last Monday, Mwangaza filed a petition asking the court to prohibit the County Assembly from discussing the ouster motion.

Through lawyer Elias Mutuma, the former County MP argued that a member of the assembly acting as the clerk called and signed the publication of the impeachment motion.

She also stated in court that the fact that 68 out of 69 MCAs supported the motion for impeachment demonstrated that the assembly had a predetermined mindset on the matter.

While declining to appear before the assembly, the county boss on Tuesday said the process used by the ward reps was flawed.

The governor told locals that there was no supporting evidence for the claims leveled against her.

“The office of the governor is not established through a piece of paper so that you discard it at your whims. It is unheard of to impeach a governor after just two months in office. What have I done?” she posed.

According to the former County MP, the Ward Reps only plotted to oust her because she declined to establish a ward fund.

“We were not elected to be cowards. They cannot remove me from office. I will guard the resources of Meru with all my ability. I will make Meru a model county in terms of development,” she said, adding that UDA’s chairman Johnson Muthama had tried to mediate but his efforts were shot down by the lawmakers.

“I want to thank Mr Muthama for trying to intervene but the MCAs said they cannot meet without MPs. I cannot beg them on my knees if they do not want to work with me.”

She is facing impeachment over alleged gross misconduct, gross violation of various national and county laws, abuse of office, among others.
